Exhibition: The Myth of the Lone Genius
This exhibition curated by John "JJ" Pagani challenges the myth of the "lone genius" artist. Instead, it shows that being a successful contemporary artist and being an active, civic-minded advocate for the arts are complementary.
This invitational exhibition would showcase contemporary artworks created by volunteers from the Visual Arts Alliance (VAA), a nonprofit, all-volunteer organization that supports and celebrates the visual arts through exhibitions, education, and community engagement. It highlights a unique community crossover, as several participating VAA volunteers are also current Glassell Studio School students or alumni.
The exhibition concept explores the intersection of rigorous studio practice and arts citizenship. It turns the spotlight onto the behind-the-scenes facilitators who build platforms for others, revealing them as accomplished artists. By bridging these two distinct networks, the exhibition fosters a dynamic dialogue between emerging student voices and established local advocates across various media.
